Stress-free through the holidays with 7 practical tips

The holidays often bring more than just joy. How do you keep your cool during this busy time?

The holidays often bring more than just joy. Whether planning family celebrations, juggling work deadlines, or simply trying to show off your best cooking skills, the end of the year can be quite challenging. Instead of enjoying a time of celebration, warmth and fun, we often experience overwhelming pressure and stress to perform at our best. But how do you keep your cool during this busy time?

Chart your stress factors

It is very important to become aware of the stress that the holidays can bring. You do this by considering how this stress manifests itself in you. And in what areas of your life are you currently very busy? Taking a moment to think about this will help you see the signs of stress coming and keep the balance between your work and personal life. For example, are you experiencing fatigue, headaches or decreased concentration? This may indicate overloading your body and mind. If so, pull the brakes and take time for yourself. These seven practical tips will help you arm yourself against the stress and strain of the holiday season on and off the job.

1. Take adequate rest

Schedule time for yourself. During this busy time, it is important not to lose sight of yourself. Whether it's a short walk, a few minutes of meditation or just a few deep breaths in and out, these moments of rest contribute to your mental well-being and help keep stress under control.

2. Prioritize your tasks

Make a list of your tasks on and off the job and rank them according to urgency and importance. Commit to the most urgent items and consider whether you can defer less urgent tasks to a quieter period. Communicate clearly about what is feasible within the holiday period and set limits to avoid undue pressure.

3. Divide the tasks

Don't feel obligated to do everything yourself. Divide the tasks and pass on some responsibilities. Everyone has his or her qualities, make use of them. Many hands make light work! You can also apply this tip in the workplace. Involve colleagues in your tasks and try to divide them if possible. A joint effort can not only reduce the workload, but can also strengthen the cohesion of your team.

4. Don't put too much pressure on yourself

Be realistic about your expectations. Are you not a kitchen prince or princess? That's totally okay, put your energy into the things you are good at. Set achievable goals for yourself and accept when not everything goes smoothly. Also, avoid the pressure to paint the perfect picture and be constantly connected by taking a break from your smartphone. That way you can really enjoy the parties!

5. Focus on gratitude

What are you grateful for right now? Taking a moment to reflect on the gratitude you feel can help shift the focus from stressful aspects to positive elements in your life. Even during the hustle and bustle, try to be present in the moment and take a moment to reflect on the coziness, warmth and connection that the holidays bring.

6. Make arrangements for vacation

Does your organization close collectively during the holidays or or does someone have to be at work all the time? Discuss in time what the rules on this are and who takes vacation when. This way you can better organize both your private and work life during these busy days.

7. Celebrate, even in your organization

Whether it's a big New Year's reception or a small Christmas party with your team, take time to let off steam and celebrate successes. This can help reduce work-related stress and promote a positive work environment.

Now that you are armed with practical tips to defy stress during the holidays, nothing will stand in your way of enjoying this special time. Remember that the holidays are all about joy, warmth and togetherness. Take time for yourself, share the burdens, and celebrate not only the festivities, but also your successes, big and small.
