Staying true to yourself during major changes

"The only constant in life is change," as Heraclitus once said, but that doesn’t make a divorce, a move, or an unexpected layoff any easier to handle. Our Community Manager, Aline Hupert, shares some practical tools to help you stay grounded when everything around you is in flux.

“The only constant in life is change”—the Greek philosopher Heraclitus was right. His worldview was based on the idea that chaos (change) and logos (order) always went hand in hand. But how do we deal with that divorce, that move, or that layoff we didn’t see coming at all? And that’s not even mentioning the geopolitical turmoil.

Below, Aline Hupert, psychologist and Community Manager at BloomUp, shares our best tools for staying in control during times of transition—or, as Heraclitus might say (the best ways to find logos in the chaos):

1. Focus on your body:

Did you know that your body calms down faster than your mind? That’s why you should make sure to get enough exercise and relaxation every day. When you can’t control external factors, it helps to focus on what you can control.

Examples:

  • Start and end your day with some stretching
  • Take a few deep breaths for 3 minutes before a difficult conversation
  • Go for a walk without your cell phone
  • Why not get a massage?

2. Structure your day:

Change blurs boundaries, so having a structured daily routine brings peace of mind. I start and end my day on my yoga mat (lighting a candle and spending 30 minutes stretching and breathing), and then I go for a walk.

Examples:

  • Get up and go to bed at a set time
  • a screen-free lunch break
  • Plan your meals (simple but healthy is the best approach)

3. Reflect:

Remind yourself of who you are, regardless of the changes taking place. What are your core values? What are the qualities that have always defined you?

Examples:

  • Do something that has always defined you (a passion, something creative, etc.)
  • Write a Post-it note and hang it up that says , “Even in times of uncertainty, I am someone who…”
  • Write a short piece at the end of the day about who you are

4. Connect with others:

Your nervous system needs other people. Pay attention to and distinguish between the people with whom you feel safe and those with whom you don’t. You don’t have to carry this burden alone.

Examples:

  • Stay in touch with your family
  • Check in with a friend at set times
  • Make new friends who share your hobby or passion

What's next?

Staying in control during a transition is one thing. Guiding an entire team through change is quite another.

In our latest webinar on leadership in times of change, we explore how you, as a leader, can project a sense of calm without glossing over reality, and how you can keep your team engaged when the ground is shifting beneath your feet.
