Psychologist reimbursement in Belgium

Every health fund pays back something different for a psychologist, and almost none of them explain it clearly in one place. This page does, fund by fund, with the source alongside.

How does psychologist reimbursement work?

Two separate routes run alongside each other in Belgium, and they are often confused.

The statutory health insurance

Through the NIHDI you can see a conventioned psychologist at a heavily reduced rate. That route is the same whichever fund you belong to, but the number of places is limited and there are waiting times.

Your health fund's supplementary insurance

On top of that, your health fund pays back part of the cost of sessions with a psychologist you choose yourself. This benefit does differ per fund, and that is what this overview covers.

You pay first, you are reimbursed after

For the supplementary benefit you pay the full session, and your fund transfers the contribution to your account afterwards. For CM and Helan, BloomUp files that claim for you; for the other funds you file it yourself with a certificate from BloomUp.

The difference with a conventioned psychologist

A conventioned psychologist works inside the NIHDI reimbursement scheme. You pay a fixed, low amount per session there, and for children and young people it is often free entirely. Availability is limited, which is why waiting times of several weeks to several months are common.

The psychologists on BloomUp work outside that scheme. You pay for the session yourself and your health fund pays part of it back. In return you are matched straight away, with an introduction often within 48 hours, instead of joining a waiting list, and you choose who you continue with.

The two routes cannot be combined for the same session. Your health fund pays out the supplementary benefit when there is no contribution from the statutory insurance.

Combining with insurance through work

If your employer has a hospitalization or outpatient policy with a psychological component, you can combine it with your health fund's benefit. Claim your contribution from your health fund first, then request proof from BloomUp to share with the insurer.
